My head throbs as the bone-deep cold air of early morning lays over me like a blanket. My cheeks and nose are chilled, making me wish for a heavy quilt and a warm fire. I don’t open my eyes. If I do, I’ll have to face the day and I’m not ready for that.

“She needs something more than what we can give her. She needs a real bed, a warm place to sleep, maybe even a doctor.” Lance’s voice is strained and laced with concern.

“I told you, she will be fine.” Footsteps sound as Brooks speaks and I can almost feel Lancelot pacing.

“It’s been three days. Three. You said she needed rest, but this is more than that. What if…what if she doesn’t wake? I can’t lose her again. I won’t.”

My heart swells at the words and I want to open my eyes. I want to reach out and touch him, hold him close and make him see I’m fine. But I can’t. My hands won’t move, my eyelids won’t lift, and with a growing sense of dread, I understand what’s happened.

A curse. It’s not the cold air blanketing me. It’s dark magic. And I have no way to tell either of them that I’m trapped in the dark. Frozen but aware. Sleeping forever unless someone saves me.

They’ll save me. They have to.
